PRX: A Bit Less Wild

Hi friend of PRX,

We are mourning Maurice Sendak, who matched fierce creativity with a disdain for the treacly and cloying. Like a good journalist, he aimed for the truth of something in all its messy craziness, not the icky nostalgia that everyone knew not to be true.

PRX likes true things — human stories from The Moth Radio Hour, Snap Judgment, and State of the Re:Union. The Truth that emerges in fiction or in performance.

And really good factual stories, where the real wild things are.

PRX is busy as ever with lots of new developments in the works for the spring and summer. New content, new apps, and lots of planning for the Public Media Accelerator. We kicked off April with a staff outing to see The Moth live at the Somerville theater. We listened, we after-partied, we bowled. We work hard at PRX but we also know how to have a lot of fun.

WBUR presented an evening of “True Stories Told Live” by the main stage of The Moth. The stories were captivating, emotional and hilarious. It was great to see our friends from The Moth and witness the magic they make happen on stage and on air time and again. Get excited because previews for The Moth Radio Hour Spring 2012 Season are now up on PRX.

PRX teamed up with FRONTLINE and organized a hackathon to investigate innovative ways to marry technology and storytelling. The group created working prototypes that they demoed at the end of the session. Here’s PRX Developer Chris Rhoden’s blog post about the project he worked on. Also, check out FRONTLINE’s Andrew Golis’ interview with AIR about the hackathon and producer/developer relationships.

The WNYC Android App went live and is now available in the Play Store. Get it now! Have an iPhone? Get the iPhone app as well.

Our developers are not only creating amazing apps and tools for public media, they’re blogging, too. Check out Lead Developer Rebecca Nesson’s blog post on PRX Labs about “Hacking Open Educational Resources” at the Berkman Center.

We’ve had a lot of visits recently and were lucky to get a special visit from our friends at the Third Coast International Audio Festival. Have you submitted your documentary yet to the 2012 Third Coast/Richard H. DrieHaus Foundation Competition? Submit here and then post it on PRX!

PRX is a Webby Honoree

That’s right! PRX is a Webby Honoree in two categories in the 16th Annual Webby Awards. PRX.org was honored for Radio/Podcast Website while the KCRW Music Mine iPad app developed by PRX was honored under Mobile and Apps: Music.

The Webbys (Oscars of the internet) received over 10,000 entries this year. In addition to the winners, they name the top 15% as honorees. We’re happy to be honored alongside some amazing company such as Pitchfork, Scientific American, Marketplace from American Public Media and CBC (amongst others). PRX Ends Nuke Work

Hi friend of PRX,

It took some doing. A few calls from the president. But PRX has reluctantly agreed to stop work on a nuclear fuel processing facility near a Dunkin’ Donuts in Harvard Square. “The crullers were glowing,” said PRX’s Jake Shapiro. “That and CPB won’t fund it anyway.”

PRX has refused to stop work on a parallel project called the Accelerator. “We have nothing to hide from the inspectors,” said Shapiro.

PRX Monthly Update

We’re still wearing the cowboy boots we put on at the Integrated Media Association Conference and SXSW Interactive in Austin, Texas. Sure, it may have rained, but that didn’t stop us from making waves with exciting announcements, panels and discussions about the future of public media.

IMA/SXSW:

PRX folks were very busy in Austin talking shop, discussing new tools for public media, and answering questions about the Public Media Accelerator. In addition, PRX Managing Director John Barth headed out to West Texas to visit our friends at Marfa Public Radio.

Technical Projects Director Matt MacDonald shared some highlights from his panel discussion at IMA, “Pledge Your Support for Mobile.” Check out his post and join the conversation going on about mobile giving.

Public Media Accelerator:

During a keynote address at IMA, PRX CEO Jake Shapiro and John Bracken of Knight Foundation discussed the vision and goals of the Public Media Accelerator. And, they announced Corey Ford would be the Director of the project. We are very excited to have him on board. Learn more about Corey here and check out the Public Media Accelerator in the news.

Generation PRX:

Lee Hirsch’s new film Bully finally received an MPAA “PG-13″ rating after much debate. Generation PRX Director Jones Franzel knows something about bullying having just finished working on Bullied: Teen Stories from Generation PRX, an hour long special on bullying hosted and produced by teens. She took a stand on the original “R” rating over at the Huffington Post, and was interviewed on FoxNews.com about the special. Listen to Bullied here.

Back at home base, PRX listening went mobile with the launch of our new audio player. Now you can listen to PRX.org pieces on most mobile devices, including iPhone, iPad and Android. THE ORGANIZATION
PRX is an award-winning public media company, harnessing technology to bring compelling stories to millions of people. PRX is a Knight News Challenge winner, as well as the recipient of a Peabody Award, a Webby Award, and the MacArthur Award for Creative and Effective Institutions. Our services are focused in three strategic areas: Content, Distribution, and Innovation.

PRX operates public radio’s largest distribution marketplace, offering thousands of programs for broadcast and digital use, including The Moth Radio Hour, State of the Re:Union, Snap Judgment, and Sound Opinions. We support a network of youth producers through Generation PRX, and showcase the best stories on our 24/7 channel Public Radio Remix.

PRX also creates cutting-edge mobile apps for public radio, including the Public Radio Player and This American Life.

THE OPPORTUNITY
The Director of Development is a new position. We are searching for an individual who has successfully provided leadership, strategic direction and overall management of fundraising and direct revenue-generating activities in the non-profit world and who thrives in a fast paced, entrepreneurial environment. The Director will design and implement strategies to develop and increase financial support from foundations, corporations, individuals and other sources.

This is a unique opportunity to work in a dynamic organization as the architect and hands-on builder of a high-caliber, comprehensive fundraising and business development program.

The Director of Development is a member of the senior management team and serves as senior staff liaison to the Board of Directors regarding fundraising and revenue-generating activities.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE:
The Director of Development position requires a sophisticated, strategic and collaborative executive who has demonstrated the ability to lead, grow and manage a successful development program for at least six years. We are seeking someone with a proactive, resourceful, entrepreneurial and energetic leadership style including a willingness to be hands-on in executing a variety of fundraising activities. The ability to build and maintain relationships is a key strength. The ideal candidate for this position enjoys a healthy mix of mission, ambition, and fun.

TRAVEL
Fifteen percent domestic travel expected; International travel as appropriate.

COMPENSATION
Salary is competitive, commensurate with experience, and includes a competitive benefits package.
